JBL Charge 5 review The Goldilocks of portable Bluetooth speakers.

The JBL Charge 5 is a portable and rugged Bluetooth speaker that ticks all the boxes. With a solid build, long

JBL Charge 5 batterylife, and decent power output, the Charge 5 is a reliable companion for sonic adventures. When it comes to waterproof JBL Charge 5 Bluetooth speakers, JBL is America’s darling. The company launches several new products every year, and in theory, they keep getting better. The latest addition to the Charge family is the JBL Charge 5. It has all the hallmarks of a premium JBL speaker, but is it worth the price increase from the JBL Charge 4? The JBL Charge 5 is about the same shape and weight as a football. The device is wrapped in durable fabric, and there are silicone bumpers on the sides to protect its passive radiators. There are also rubberized silicone strips on the bottom of the case to keep it in place while you play music. It’s safe to say that the Charge 5 is ready for your next beach vacation or weekend camping trip.

How long does it last?JBL says the Charge 5 can play for 20 hours on a single charge. Sadly, it doesn’t offer fast charging. While this speaker is advertised as portable, it won’t fit in your pocket – if you want something like that, buy the JBL Clip 4. The Charge 5 is surprisingly lightweight, so it won’t weigh you down on a hike or trip to the beach if you can find a place to put it. The speaker has onboard controls, and while it doesn’t have a button for skipping tracks backward, double-tapping the play button will skip forward.
The device has a USB-C charging port and a USB-A socket on the back for charging the device in the field. Some people don’t trust the water resistance promised by the IP rating, and we don’t blame them. The Charge 5 is officially rated IP67 for water resistance, which means it’s dustproof and can survive being submerged in 1 meter of tap water for up to 30 minutes – which matched our experience. Even when the Charge 5 was firmly submerged in a bucket of water, it sounded just as good as when it was dry – make sure

Our Executive Editor Chris Thomas once used a pair of JBL Charge 3 speakers to DJ at a small wedding—there’s no doubt that the Charge 5 can do the job!

Forget Snapdragon: The new Intel Dell XPS 13 promises the longest laptop battery life yet

Qualcomm steps aside. There may be a new  Dell XPS 13 battery life champion on the way The new Dell XPS 13 was just announced, and on paper it’s an absolute Dell XPS 13 battery life champion. Powered by Intel’s Core Ultra 200 series chips (codenamed “Lunar Lake”), this 13-inch ultra-thin laptop promises “new AI experiences” in a thin, light, and portable form factor.

The announcement of Dell’s thinnest XPS yet coincides with the start of IFA 2024 in Berlin this week—a massive tech event celebrating its 100th anniversary. How thin are we talking about here? Almost absurdly thin, at 05.58 inches wide and weighing just 2.6 pounds. That means it’s nearly identical in size to the excellent Dell XPS 13 (2024) with Snapdragon X Elite that we recently reviewed.

Like its Copilot+ sibling, the new Intel Dell XPS 13 can be upgraded to a 13.4-inch OLED display (2880 x 1800), though the entry-level model is limited to an FHD+ IPS panel. Check out the Dell XPS 13 (9350) spec sheet below… While a 120Hz Tandem OLED screen (like the iPad Pro 2024) is impressive, the Dell XPS 13 Laptop Battery life figures are even more newsworthy. The Snapdragon XPS 13 already has the longest battery life of any consumer laptop we’ve tested – an amazing 19 hours and 41 minutes of web browsing with its screen brightness set to 150 nits, although Dell promises up to 27 hours of battery life when playing 1080p video. If the new Intel version can really last up to 30 hours of video playback in real-world use, that would be an incredible technical feat.

Dell seems to have put a lot of effort into the staying power of this new XPS 13-inch model, with the laptop offering four different performance configurations to keep this slim system running as cool and quiet as possible. These thermal management configurations include “optimized,” “cool,” “quiet,” and “ultra performance” – meaning it’s unlikely to get too hot from sitting on your lap for long periods of time. As is becoming increasingly common with the best laptops, the Lunar Lake Dell XPS 13 promises new AI features, such as Magix Vegas Pro and Luminar Neo. Both apps claim to speed up your workflow by making video and image editing more efficient.

Huawei Mate XT, the world’s first tri-fold smartphone, is officially released

Huawei has unveiled the world’s first tri-fold smartphone, the Huawei Mate XT. After several leaks and teasers, we now have official information. The device was launched in Huawei’s home country of China. Note that the company calls it the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design.

Huawei Mate XT Officially Launched, World’s First Tri-fold Smartphone

This smartphone has two hinges and a display. The display measures 10.2 inches when fully unfolded and is an OLED panel with a 3K resolution. It has an aspect ratio of 16:11, in case you were wondering. Needless to say, this is much larger than the average foldable smartphone (which is around 8 inches at most). When fully unfolded, this phone will feature a 10.2-inch 3K LTPO OLED display

It’s worth noting that this is the LTPO display Huawei uses, which has 1,440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming. In addition to this, it has a touch sampling rate of 240Hz. And yes, the display is protected by UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass).

Let’s jump straight to the display, as it’s certainly the main attraction. The phone itself is made of metal and leatherette. There’s leatherette on the back of each display section, so basically the entire back of the phone is leatherette. There’s an octagonal camera island on the back of the phone, but we’ll talk more about that later. Equipped with 16GB RAM and 5,600mAh

 smartphone Huawei Mate XT battery

We still don’t know what SoC is used here, but if we had to guess, we’d say it’s the Kirin 9010, the same processor used in the latest Pura 70 smartphone. The phone comes with 16GB RAM and offers 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage options. The specs revealed yesterday were far from the same. Instead of an 8,000mAh+ battery, the phone comes with a 5,600mAh

Tri-fold smartphone Huawei Mate XT battery

. Yes, it’s a silicon-carbon

Huawei smartphone battery, and it does look big enough for regular phones and foldable phones, but we wonder how it performs on this phone. If you end up using the phone fully unfolded, it might not be up to par. We’ll see.

The device does support 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Apart from that, it also supports 7.5W reverse wireless charging, and the charger seems to be included in the package. There are three cameras on the back, and the main camera even offers a variable aperture

The phone has three cameras on the back. The 50-megapixel main camera (f/1.4-f/4.0 aperture, OIS) is backed by a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera (f/2.2 aperture). There is also a 12-megapixel periscope telephoto camera (f/3.4 aperture, OIS, 5.5x optical zoom). On the front, you will find an 8-megapixel camera (f/2.2 aperture)

This smartphone comes pre-installed with HarmonyOS 4.2. The phone supports Bluetooth 5.2 and comes with stereo speakers. It comes in red and black colors, both with gold accents. This means that the colors leaked a few days ago were also mostly wrong.

The phone weighs 298 grams, which is not bad all things considered

The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design measures 156.7 x 219 x 4.75 mm when fully unfolded. When using only one display, the dimensions are 156.7 x 73.5 x 12.8 mm. When using both displays, the phone measures 156.7 x 143 x 4.75-7.45 mm. The device weighs 298 grams

Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 (Ryzen AI 9) review: A killer deal would make this a killer gaming laptop

It’s hard to hit all the main qualities you’re looking for in a gaming laptop, but the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 comes pretty close.

This machine packs the performance of the new AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and the tried-and-true Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 into a slender chassis. Pair that with a gorgeous 16-inch OLED display, excellent speakers, and long

ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS G16 Laptop Battery

life, and you have a recipe for success. The Zephyrus G16’s keyboard, however, hasn’t been honed long enough to achieve the same success.

Still, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 is a stellar gaming laptop, perhaps one of the best, and especially worth your time if you can snag it for under $2,000. Asus ROG ZEPHYRUS G16: The glossy silver slash on the lid with LED lighting definitely elevates it to a more premium standard. ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS G16: KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD

I already liked the Zephyrus G16’s keyboard, especially since it looks so neat on a desk. The keys are also springy, which is a plus. However, the spacing is short, and the keys on the left are smaller than those on the right, which made my pinky feel cramped while typing.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 (Ryzen AI 9) REVIEW ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS G16: AI PERFORMANCE AND FEATURES

No, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 is not a Copilot+ PC, but an AI PC. That’s thanks to its AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor. Its XDNA 2 NPU is a processing unit specifically for AI. We’re still changing the way we test AI PCs, especially given how new the technology is, so keep that in mind as you read on.

ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS G16: ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS G16 Laptop BatteryLife

What I love most about gaming laptops is that they can last a full workday on the ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS G16 Laptop Battery Life.

The Zephyrus series was one of the first gaming laptops to offer long ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS Laptop Batterylife, thanks largely to AMD’s powerful CPUs, and this laptop is no exception, with the Zephyrus G16 lasting 9 hours and 14 minutes in our ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS G16 Laptop Battery

Test. That’s ahead of the Legion 7i (3:01), the Alienware m16 R2 (6:13), the Intel Zephyrus (4:46), and the average high-end gaming laptop (5:27).

ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS G16: Webcam

I wouldn’t plan on using the Zephyrus G16’s 1080p webcam for streaming. ASUS showed me an impressive piece of tech. There’s just about everything I love about the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16. Yes, the keyboard needs work, but the rest of it is great, from the performance and design to the display and speakers. Not to mention the day-long ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS G16 laptop battery life. However, I wouldn’t recommend buying it at its price tag.

Apple iPhone 16 hands-on review: More Pro than ever

ProsBolder color options,Powerful A18 chip,Macro photography with new ultra-wide-angle camera

,Same Apple Intelligence features as Pro models,Spatial photo and video support

Cons -60Hz display refresh rateEvery year, Apple tries to convince people to buy its standard iPhone, and this year’s dual-screen strategy is no different. I’d say, though, that this year’s iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus make a far more compelling case.

Both the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus come in new, eye-catching colors that put anything else released before them to shame, along with a new ultra-wide-angle camera, new camera controls, an A18 chip, and some features that are actually on the pricier “Pro” models. I can’t say the gaps between the two series have closed yet, but I will say they’re hard to ignore — especially if you’re looking to save money without sacrificing features.

Apple also talked up the versatility of this new camera setup several times, as it effectively delivers optical-quality photos without a dedicated zoom camera – all while relying on the same pixel-binning technology I’ve previously seen on the iPhone 15 to get usable 2x zoom photos. Apple says the iPhone 16 has a largeriPhone 16 battery, but it’s not certain if the 16 Plus will have a larger battery as well. More of a focus is on how they’ve been redesigned to dissipate heat better, which will ultimately affect their energy efficiency. I suspect the power efficiency of the A18 chip will affect their lifespan, especially for the iPhone 16 Plus, as last year’s 15 Plus lasted longer than its sibling, the 15 Pro Max.

Another improvement is the upgrade to 25W MagSafe charging and Qi2 support, which means they will charge faster than previous wireless charging models. There doesn’t seem to be any improvement in its USB-C wired charging speeds, though.

In my hands-on review of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, I’ll walk you through all the new changes and whether they’re enough to convince you not to spend more for the Pros. Pre-orders will begin on September 13th, with general availability a week later on September 20th. They start at 128GB of storage, but 256GB and 512GB options are also available. Of course, I would be happy if their base storage was increased to 256GB, but 128GB is pretty much the capacity of other similar phones.

There are 5 iPhone 16 colors to choose from: black, white, pink, cyan, and ultramarine. While I did like the 5 colors from last year, the difference with the iPhone 16 this year is that the colors are deeper and more vivid. Both the ultramarine and pink look exceptionally vivid in reality, shimmering in the light at the right angle, and they are stylish enough to make you consider going without a case.

we are proud to call ourselves the battery experts. As a one stop battery shop we have all types of batteries for all devices. Think battery replacements such as laptop batteries, Apple Smartphone Battery

In addition to the bolder color scheme, the design of the iPhone 16 also follows an evolutionary path of being lighter and more durable. I thought last year’s iPhone 15 was pretty light, but the aerospace-grade aluminum bodies of the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus make them feel even lighter than their predecessors — it also helps that their smooth surfaces make them less prone to smudging.

Apple has made three new design changes: The rear cameras are now arranged vertically, with an action button and a capacitive camera control button. While they don’t change the overall design significantly, they do increase overall practicality — making them similar in functionality to the Pro iPhones. For example, they can now record spatial photos and videos, which means you can view 3D content in Apple Vision Pro or other compatible headphones.

With a lighter design and bolder colors, Apple has made them more visually appealing. Ultimately, though, which phone you choose comes down to whether you prefer the more compact iPhone 16 or need the larger screen of the iPhone 16 Plus.

The screen size of the new iPhone 16 has not changed. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus have screen sizes of 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively. Despite the larger screens on the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, I wasn’t frustrated by them, mainly because they’re easier to hold in one hand. As before, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus get upgraded dual rear cameras, including a 48MP main camera and an updated 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera. The latter will definitely get more attention this time around, as the series finally gains the ability to take macro photos, a feature that the Pro models have.

Oppo Find N5 leaks, reveals release timeline, Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip, display, camera details, and more

Last year, Oppo launched the Oppo Find N3 foldable phone in the Chinese market. However, the brand did not launch its successor this year. Recent reports claim that the brand may launch the Oppo Find N5 in the first quarter of 2025. In the latest leak, tipster Digital Chat Station has shared some key details about Oppo’s next-generation foldable phone.

The leak does not reveal information about the Oppo Find N5 battery. However, considering that the predecessor model had a 4,800mAh Oppo phones batteryand newer phones are increasingly leaning towards high-density silicon cells, the Find N5 will likely feature a larger Oppo Find N5 battery

Oppo Find N5 Key Specs (Rumored)

Foldable phones launched this year such as the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro, Honor Magic V3, and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. According to DCS, the Find N5 will be powered by the SM8750 chipset, which is nothing more than the next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC that is expected to debut in October. Therefore, it seems that the Find N5 could be the world’s first foldable phone to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip.

The leak suggests that the inner folding display and the cover screen will support 2K resolution. The device will feature a triple-camera setup on the back panel, with a 50-megapixel Sony camera on top. It will be joined by a periscope telephoto camera and possibly an ultra-wide-angle lens. Like its predecessor, the Find N5 will have a large circular camera island.

Notably, the Find N5 will be very thin and light, with a body thickness estimated to be around 9.x mm. It will also feature a three-level alert slider button and is expected to have enhanced structural reinforcement and waterproofing.

Nubia Redmagic 8 Pro review: A cut-throat gaming success

For a few years now, Nubia’s Redmagic sub-brand has been offering some of the best value-for-money gaming phones on the market. While the Asus ROG Phone range may be the biggest and best in this particular smartphone space, phones like the Redmagic 6S Pro and 7 Pro offer incredible value for money.

Pros Striking new design, fast performance,Long ZTE Nubia Red Magic 8 Pro batterylife

With the Redmagic 8 Pro, the brand has taken its core strengths, tackled its weaknesses, and wrapped it all up in a striking new design. Even if you’re not a particularly avid gamer, this is one of the most capable sub-£600 phones on the market.

To be fair, the Redmagic 8 Pro is another top-tier gaming phone, but the interesting development here is a hint of refinement amid all those mesmerizing specs. The dedicated remappable gaming ‘trigger button’ returns, giving the phone a key gaming advantage. New this time around is a boxier design that’s almost borderless, and there’s no selfie notch to get in the way either.

The Redmagic team even found time to address criticism of its camera technology, with a more competitive main sensor ensuring that photos are pleasant in most situations.

ZTE Nubia Red Magic 8 Pro battery

Nubia Redmagic 8 Pro review: Price and competition

The key attribute of any Redmagic phone (and what allows us to forgive its many rough edges and clunky decorations) is its absolutely amazing value.

The Redmagic 8 Pro is a top-of-the-line (in most respects) Android phone, starting at just £579. Add to that the fact that it comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and I’m hesitant to call this model the best of its class.

I never thought a gaming phone would do this, but the Redmagic 8 Pro comes closer to the full-screen ideal than any other phone I’ve used.

Strictly speaking, Nubia’s bold design approach isn’t all that gamer-friendly. The sharp edges and flat sides aren’t particularly comfortable to hold during long gaming sessions, especially as this is one of the heavier phones in the Redmagic range.

Besides being less comfortable to hold, there’s no real forehead or chin, which means you don’t get the dual front-facing speakers you get on the Asus ROG Phone and Lenovo Legion Phone series. The earpiece works well for that, but the bottom-mounted speakers are a little easy to block out when gaming. Sound is plenty loud and clear on both, though.

OPPO Find X8 series confirmed to use high-density silicon-carbon anode batteries

OPPO Find series product manager Zhou Yibao confirmed that the OPPO Find X8 series will feature silicon-carbon anode batteries, or what OPPO calls Glacier

OPPO Find X8 batteries

. For those unfamiliar, this new battery technology offers a higher energy density (industry-leading 763Wh/L) than traditional graphite batteries. It allows manufacturers to pack more capacity in a compact space. This is possible because

According to previous rumors from Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station, the Oppo Find X8, Find X8 Pro, and Find X8 Ultra will feature 5,600 mAh, 5,700 mAh, and 6,100 or 6,200 mAh batteries, respectively. For comparison, the Find X7 and Find X7 Ultra both feature 5,000 mAh batteries.

This new battery technology was first used in the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro (review) launched in June this year, and the

OnePlus Ace 3 Pro battery

reportedly offers 23.1% higher energy density than traditional graphite batteries. We have also seen ultra-thin foldable devices, such as the Honor Magic V2 and its newly launched Magic V3, benefit from this relatively new battery technology.

The OPPO Find series product manager also revealed that the OPPO Glacier OPPO Find battery

achieved the industry’s highest 6% negative electrode silicon carbon content. Technically, the higher the silicon content, the higher the energy density should be.

Of course, increasing the proportion of anode silicon has its limitations, and it is good to see that smartphone manufacturers are pushing the limits to provide longer battery life without sacrificing the handheld experience. According to the company’s head, Oppo has been working with CATL (one of China’s lithium-ion battery manufacturers) and has developed a battery technology cooperation plan for the next 1-3 years. This is expected to lay a solid foundation for the battery life of future OPPO Find X series devices.

OpenAI Dall-E 3 review: Generative AI for creating fantastical and fun illustrations

One of the earliest text-to-image tools is by far the best we’ve tested. With Dall-E, OpenAI pioneered the way for generative AI that turns text prompts into images. The competition is stiffer now, but version 3 of the service still holds up.

In tests comparing it to Adobe Firefly and Google ImageFX, I found Dall-E 3 to work best with realistic and engaging images, and almost always best with surreal illusions. It’s a bit slow, but it’s most likely to give you good, usable results on the first try, especially if you’re looking for interesting, not failed AI illusions.

Dall-E 3 is available only through the premium ChatGPT Plus service, which costs $20 per month and also gives you access to a more responsive version of the ChatGPT chatbot and OpenAI’s helpful GPT Store, which contains customized versions of its AI tools. If you want to get a feel for what’s possible, you can try the earlier Dall-E 2 for free, but it’s not as good.

OpenAI says it may use content submitted to Dall-E 3 to improve the model’s performance, that it shares content with a select group of “trusted service providers,” and that it doesn’t sell data or share content with third parties for marketing. You can also submit a privacy request to have OpenAI stop using your data for training or delete your account. For more information, see OpenAI’s general privacy FAQ and main privacy policy.

Here are my further findings about Dall-E 3.

How CNET tests AI image generators

CNET takes a practical approach to reviewing AI image generators. Our goal is to determine how good it is relative to the competition and what uses it’s best suited for. To do this, we give the AI prompts based on real-world use cases, such as rendering in a specific style, combining elements into a single image, and handling long descriptions. We rate the image generators on a 10-point scale that takes into account factors like how well the image matches the prompt, how creative the result is, and how responsive it is. Check out how we test AI to learn more.

How is the quality of the image? How well does it match the prompt?

ChatGPT is the best of the text-to-image AI tools I’ve tried at producing useful, interesting, and believable results. It still makes plenty of mistakes, like a pickleball player’s bat growing out of his head instead of the bat grip, but the results make me want to explore further instead of closing the browser tab. It does a much better job with dynamic scenes, contact and interaction between different subjects, and emotions.

ChatGPT is a big part of Dall-E. It amplifies your prompts, adds ornate text, and injects drama into the results. It also fosters a conversational style of use: You can request an image, then request an adjustment, without having to resubmit the entire query.

ChatGPT’s language technology also enables it to handle long, complex prompts. Advanced word processing capabilities, it turns out, are very useful for advanced image processing capabilities.

This helps Dall-E 3 outperform competitors including Adobe’s Firefly and Google’s ImageFX in translating your prompts into what you want and assembling multiple elements correctly. For example, Dall-E 3 was the only AI image generator I tested that successfully created a dragon flying over a castle, breathing fire, and holding a white, furry sheep in its claws. Sure, it held the sheep tenderly, perhaps in response to OpenAI’s draconian rules against violence, but it’s close.

Don’t expect perfection in AI-rendered images of exploding balloons. Dall-E made a lot of detail mistakes. In an image of a dog walker overwhelmed by too many dogs, the human looked ridiculous surrounded by dozens of them. But if you look closely, you’ll see the usual AI issues: One of the dogs has two heads, another is a cat, and the others have disturbing problems with their legs, ears, and tongues. But the image is still striking.

Perhaps we’ll collectively develop a new set of aesthetic rules to accommodate AI images, accepting a few errors in exchange for their value. If so, Dall-E 3 will do a great job. How attractive are these images?

Very attractive. Dall-E 3 produces vivid, eye-catching images again and again. Even with the issues, I often like them. They sometimes make me laugh and observe the details.

Motorola RAZR V3 review – the best phone of 2004

Before the RAZR revival, let’s look back at the phone that established the RAZR brandThis year, Motorola is reviving its most successful phone ever: the RAZR. Originally launched in 2004, the trendsetting phone sold more than 50 million units between 2004 and 2006 and started a “thin phone” revolution that arguably continues to this day. However, the device was also a curse for Motorola; its success led the company to release several upgraded versions that didn’t perform as well as expected

Motorola RAZR V3: Design and DisplayEven in 2019, the RAZR V3 looks and feels futuristic. The use of a metal casing gives the device a premium feel, and the iconic flip mechanism (once a common sight in the world of mobile phones) makes a pleasant “click” sound when closed. Once closed, the RAZR V3 fits easily into your pocket, and it’s so thin and light that you’ll forget it’s even there.

When the phone is closed, the front is dominated by a 96 x 80 pixel color secondary screen that lets you see the time and date, as well as caller information. It also serves as a viewfinder for the phone’s VGA camera, which we’ll get to later. The volume rocker and shortcut keys are located on the side of the topmost part of the phone (the part with the screen open), making them difficult to reach whether the phone is closed or open. There’s no power button on the side, instead it’s on the “end call” key.

Motorola RAZR V3 Review – Best Phone of 2004

Flip the V3 over and you’ll find the speaker as well as a removable panel that reveals the removable

 Motorola RAZR V3 Battery

(remember that?) and SIM card slot. There’s no expandable storage on this phone, and it’s limited to 5MB of internal memory.

Open the phone and you’ll find a keypad and a 2.2-inch 176 x 220 LCD screen. The former is made from a single slab of aluminum, which sounds like a texting addict’s worst nightmare, but it’s not. Despite the lack of “proper” buttons, the V3’s keyboard is a joy to use — provided you can get used to T9 predictive text, of course.

Motorola RAZR V3: Software and Performance

Motorola RAZR V3 Review – Best Phones of 2004, Best Phones of 2019 Like most phones of the early 2000s, the RAZR V3 ran a proprietary software system unique to Motorola phones — this was long before apps and downloads became common, and while it was possible to surf the web and access email, this was not a smartphone.

While we judge modern smartphones on overall speed — which is usually related to the processor and the amount of available RAM — the RAZR V3 was born in an era when we were more concerned with usability. Moving around the phone was fairly easy, though there was a certain amount of lag when switching between features. Browsing the web was a pain, with pages taking a long time to load on pre-3G connections. Games were also slow, which just goes to show how low our expectations were in 2004. You definitely didn’t want to give up the point-and-shoot camera for the V3, as the first model could only take VGA-resolution photos. They looked terrible, and in 2004, the phone was more about sharing photos via MMS than blowing them up to poster size like modern smartphones do now. The phone could also record video, but the quality was poor and again only suitable for sharing via MMS.

If we were to judge the RAZR V3 by modern standards, it would rate poorly; phones have evolved dramatically over the past 15 years, and we expect more from these devices today. The RAZR V3 was groundbreaking in 2004, but can you really imagine yourself using a phone with a VGA camera, no apps, and even no WiFi support in 2019?
