Pros<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its slim metal body looks and feels luxurious, the display is bright and eye-catching, theHuawei MediaPad X1 Tablet Battery<\/a><\/strong>life is good, and the camera takes decent photos. Insert a 4G LTE SIM card and you can use the tablet like a phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It runs an older version of Android, and Huawei’s Emotion interface makes navigating the tablet often sluggish and irritating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s 7.18mm thick, which is about the same as the iPad mini, though it’s narrower and shorter with a 7-inch display instead of an 8-inch one. I found I could easily slide it into an inside jacket pocket, but it’s awkward to carry in a jeans pocket\u2014something to keep in mind if you’re hoping to use it as an everyday phone. Software and processor<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Huawei has customized Android on the X1 with its Emotion interface. It’s a stark departure from the stock Android experience, so you might not immediately realize you’re using an older version of the software. The main change is that there’s no grid-like app list. Instead, all of your installed apps are spread across up to six home screens. Camera<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The metal back panel hides a 13-megapixel camera, complete with an LED flash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With moderate use, which included downloading and playing games, watching an hour of Netflix, sending and receiving emails, and tweeting a few times — all with the brightness turned down to just over half — the X1 easily lasted a full day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How long you’ll last really depends on what you use it for. If you insert a SIM card and use it as a phone, making calls, browsing on 4G, with push email and GPS activated, you shouldn’t expect to last “a few days”. Turn the brightness down, avoid anything too strenuous, and I’m sure you’ll make it to the next day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One interesting feature is the ability to plug a phone into the X1 and charge it using the X1’s battery. You need a separate cable – a micro-USB to micro-USB cable, which I’ve never seen before, so I doubt you have one lying around – which will, of course, shorten the tablet’s lifespan, but it’ll certainly come in handy if you really need your phone to keep going until you can find a plug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Huawei claims the X1 is a tablet, its ability to make calls and send texts means you can use it as a primary phone. Whether you treat it as a phone or a tablet, the X1 is a nice device. Its screen is sharp and eye-catching, and the slim metal design is pleasing to the eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
