AI Mode is our most powerful AI search feature yet, with more advanced reasoning and multimodal analysis, and the ability to explore deeper with follow-up questions and helpful web links. In the coming weeks, you’ll see a new AI Mode tab in the search bar on Google Search and the Google app. AI mode uses our query fan-out technology underneath to break your question into subtopics and issue multiple queries for you at once. This allows Google Search to explore the web more deeply than traditional Google Search, helping you discover more web resources and find high-quality, relevant content that matches your question.

AI mode is our first introduction to cutting-edge features in Gemini and a preview of where we’re headed. As we gather feedback, we’ll gradually incorporate many features in AI mode into the core search experience. Starting this week, we’re rolling out AI  mode and a custom version of Gemini 2.5 (our smartest model) in the US.

Deep search in AI mode to help you research

For questions that require more comprehensive answers, we’re introducing a deeper research feature in AI mode called Deep Search. Deep Search uses the same query fan-out technology, but takes it to the next level. To provide a more personalized experience, AI mode will soon provide personalized suggestions based on your search history. You can also choose to connect other Google apps, starting with Gmail, to get more context about you.

Custom charts and graphs to visualize your data

When you need additional data processing or visualization help, AI mode can analyze complex data sets and create vivid charts, all tailored to your query. For example, you want to compare the home field advantage of two different baseball teams. Search will use Google’s real-time sports information for analysis and generate interactive charts to answer your specific question.

Google Search may soon become more conversational on Android devices thanks to artificial intelligence, according to unreleased code discovered by 9to5 Google. The search app may soon add an AI mode that combines interactive discussions and other features to make Google’s base service more like the Gemini AIassistant.

AImode (referred to as AIM in the unreleased code) blends the human-like interactions of Gemini Live with Google Search and joins the visual understanding and analysis provided by Google Lens. In AIM, you can respond to the results of a Google Search. Not only can you view a list of results, but you can also ask follow-up questions, interrupt replies, and otherwise treat Search like Gemini Live.

If it rolls out, AI mode should appear as a tab in the bottom navigation bar of the Google app. In addition to using voice search, you can also use photos taken with your phone or other uploaded photos. You can then explain what you want to search for in the image. Another interesting point in the code is that its placeholder is a winking emoji. Gemini or search?

AI mode in Google Search makes sense at first glance, but when viewed in context, it raises some questions. It looks very similar to Gemini, more like a variation of Gemini Live. During Alphabet’s Q1 2025 earnings call, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that Google Search’s AI features now have “1.5 billion monthly active users.”

Google began rolling out AI Panorama on a large scale last May. Despite some embarrassing revelations shortly after launch, the company has continued to update and expand the tool, offering AI Overviews for more query types and even officially adding ads, aiming to compete with other AI search tools like ChatGPT Search and Perplexity.

AIOverview is just one of many AI tools the company is developing; in the first quarter, it launched experimental AI models in Gemini 2.5 Pro, the ability to create AI podcasts using the Gemini deep search tool, and a Gemini-powered Google Maps feature that analyzes screenshots to help you plan your trip. In March, Google also announced that it would officially abandon the mobile version of Google Assistant in favor of Gemini “in the coming months.” In today’s earnings call, Pichai said that “tablets, cars, and devices connected to phones, such as headphones and watches,” will switch to Gemini by the end of the year.

In terms of hardware, Google launched the Pixel 9A in the first quarter, but the phone was not available until April 10 due to “component quality issues.”

One of the earliest text-to-image tools is by far the best we’ve tested. With Dall-E, OpenAI pioneered the way for generative AI that turns text prompts into images. The competition is stiffer now, but version 3 of the service still holds up.

In tests comparing it to Adobe Firefly and Google ImageFX, I found Dall-E 3 to work best with realistic and engaging images, and almost always best with surreal illusions. It’s a bit slow, but it’s most likely to give you good, usable results on the first try, especially if you’re looking for interesting, not failed AI illusions.

Dall-E 3 is available only through the premium ChatGPT Plus service, which costs $20 per month and also gives you access to a more responsive version of the ChatGPT chatbot and OpenAI’s helpful GPT Store, which contains customized versions of its AI tools. If you want to get a feel for what’s possible, you can try the earlier Dall-E 2 for free, but it’s not as good.

OpenAI says it may use content submitted to Dall-E 3 to improve the model’s performance, that it shares content with a select group of “trusted service providers,” and that it doesn’t sell data or share content with third parties for marketing. ChatGPT is the best of the text-to-image AI tools I’ve tried at producing useful, interesting, and believable results. It still makes plenty of mistakes, like a pickleball player’s bat growing out of his head instead of the bat grip, but the results make me want to explore further instead of closing the browser tab. It does a much better job with dynamic scenes, contact and interaction between different subjects, and emotions.

ChatGPT is a big part of Dall-E. It amplifies your prompts, adds ornate text, and injects drama into the results. It also fosters a conversational style of use: You can request an image, then request an adjustment, without having to resubmit the entire query.

ChatGPT’s language technology also enables it to handle long, complex prompts. Advanced word processing capabilities, it turns out, are very useful for advanced image processing capabilities.

This helps Dall-E 3 outperform competitors including Adobe’s Firefly and Google’s ImageFX in translating your prompts into what you want and assembling multiple elements correctly. For example, Dall-E 3 was the only AI image generator I tested that successfully created a dragon flying over a castle, breathing fire, and holding a white, furry sheep in its claws. Sure, it held the sheep tenderly, perhaps in response to OpenAI’s draconian rules against violence, but it’s close.

Don’t expect perfection in AI-rendered images of exploding balloons. Dall-E made a lot of detail mistakes. In an image of a dog walker overwhelmed by too many dogs, the human looked ridiculous surrounded by dozens of them. But if you look closely, you’ll see the usual AI issues: One of the dogs has two heads, another is a cat, and the others have disturbing problems with their legs, ears, and tongues. But the image is still striking.

Perhaps we’ll collectively develop a new set of aesthetic rules to accommodate AI images, accepting a few errors in exchange for their value. If so, Dall-E 3 will do a great job. How attractive are these images?

We’re about to learn how comfortable we are in the age of AI photos—and it’s happening soon. I effortlessly snapped this couple vaping on a beach towel. They were right there in the background of one of my vacation photos, really ruining the mood. Google Pixel’s Magic Editor feature captured them with just a few taps, and you know what? I’m fine with that. But what’s hard to accept is that there are boundaries.

The vacation photos I took with my iPhone and edited with my Pixel-8-Pro are exactly what Google’s generative AI editing features are designed for. We went to the beach on Lake Michigan to watch the sunset, and I took a cute photo of my child sitting on my husband’s shoulders. It’s a moment you want to freeze and save in a jar for a lifetime.

Except for a few little guys in the background. Three taps in the Magic Editor and they were gone. But while I was there, I started thinking about what else I could change about the scene. What about a few cars in the parking lot behind them? What about the trash cans in the distance? Maybe I could emphasize the glow of the setting sun a little more?

Just like digital processing, we will all find our own ways to use generative AI photo editing, as these tools are certainly not going away anytime soon. For certain types of photos, I think I do like the option to remove distractions from the background. But I don’t need every photo to look polished enough to be printed on a Christmas card, just as I wouldn’t write a letter to a friend like a college application essay. Sometimes, a little grit is perfect.
