GoPro Hero 7 Black review: Design and features

The Hero 7 Black looks very similar to last year’s Hero 6 Black, with the square lens housing still protruding a few millimeters from the front.

It may look a little drab, but that’s actually a good thing, especially if you’re a pro-level GoPro user, as you probably already own a range of mounts and accessories. In fact, you can use the GoPro Hero 7 with any accessories from the Hero 5 Black and later. As with older GoPro cameras, the Hero 7 has two housings: one housing houses the camera’s removable 1,220 mAh GoPro Hero 7 Black Camera Batteryand microSD card slot, and the other housing the micro-HDMI 2.0 video output and USB-Type C “SuperCharge” port, which can also be used for data transfer.

The power and shutter buttons are in the same places – on the left edge and on the top plate – and behind them is a 2-inch touchscreen that can now be used in both landscape and portrait modes. There’s also a simple monochrome LCD screen on the front that displays key information such as mode and elapsed time.Hero 7 Black Camera Batterylife isn’t much of a boost over last year’s model, with around 70 minutes of 4K video at 60fps with HyperSmooth enabled. GoPro says HyperSmooth uses less power – so if you disable it you’ll get a slight improvement in battery life.

Charging doesn’t take long, especially when using the fast charger provided in the box, but I’d recommend carrying a power bank or some spare batteries when you’re out shooting.GoPro Hero 7 Black Camera BatterySadly there’s still no tripod mount on the camera body, but the camera is fully waterproof up to 10 meters. Being able to throw a GoPro in the pool and take it diving, surfing and swimming with it without worrying about damage is a huge plus. Its competitors, such as the Yi 4K+, require waterproof housings to work properly underwater, which seriously affects the sound quality when out of the water.

If you need to take your camera deeper underwater, it can do that as well, as it can protect the action camera in up to 60 meters of water.
